When we ruminate our thoughts are like a snowball rolling down a hill, they start small but can quickly grow into something bigger and harder to control.

Desgined for Ruminators

Rumi is the tool for externalizing and making sense of your thoughts when you catch yourself “snowballing”. Record what’s on your mind, get insights in real time, and reframe your thinking with personalized feedback based on Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) practices.

How Rumi Works

  • Rumi extracts key words and themes as you rant, which visually manifest as snowballs that split and grow in size.

  • As you watch your thoughts “snowball”, you can start to see what’s bothering you the most. Tap on any snowball for more insights on how a given theme is contributing to your frustration and anxieties.

  • Receive personalized CBT/DBT strategies for moving forward.

Use Cases for Rumi

With Rumi’s premium plan, gain access to the active listening feature that will notify you when you’re starting to snowball during a conversation.

  • Bring your insights to therapy to make the most of your session.

Family Plan

  • Avoid the drama at dinner and silent treatment at breakfast. With Alexa integration, Rumi can step in as a mediator when there are disagreements.

Enterprise / Academic Plan

  • Receive weekly reports synthesizing top concerns of your constituents. Think of it like a survey with a 100% response rate.

Note: Content is generalized to protect member anonymity. Members consent

  • Gather around Rumi during an ideation session to see your team’s ideas organize in the form of a mind map.

Process

Beyond UX/UI design in Figma, this project was an opportunity to play with AI as a tool for prototyping. I tested ChatGPT’s ability to mimic a therapist by either providing or listening to a rant and, prompt by prompt, breakdown the key themes to provide personalized strategies for the ruminator. This function would ultimately be streamlined within the app.

What if Rumi also had a lab?

Rumi is more than an app. The Universal Rants Project collects a vast repository of thoughts and emotions to understand what preoccupies the minds of individuals across the globe. This data could be used to inform investigative journalism, entrepreneurship and innovation, and research groups. Take a look at a rants map below, with (somewhat amusing) examples generated by ChatGPT. Next steps for this project would include more serious data collection and visualization of our collective consciousness.
